Summary: A great final chapter to the legendary SATB series!!! 1977-1983
Comment: I have been a HUGE Smokey And The Bandit fan ever since I was 12. I know that the final chapter is one of the worst films of all time. I have the feeling that there should be a fourth one with John Goodman taking over the late Jackie Gleason (1916-1987), (we will always miss him) Will Ferrel as The Bandit, Bo Derek as Frog, Eric Roberts as the Snowman, and Hank Azaria as Junior. These series have been around from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. Hal Needham had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with this one.

Summary: I'll be nice and give it 2 stars
Comment: I was very close to just giving this one star, but the movie wasn't totally horrible. Oh, it was close, but it wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen. Jackie Gleason and Jerry Reed were as good as they could be in this, but they weren't given much good material to work with.
My biggest problem with this movie was the Burt Reynolds cameo at the end. (IF YOU'VE NEVER SEEN THE MOVIE, DON'T READ THE REST OF THIS PARAGRAPH.) Jerry Reed's character has spent the whole movie posing as The Bandit and is finally cornered by Smokey (who thinks he's been chasing the real Bandit.) Reed turns to face Smokey - and all of a sudden Jerry Reed becomes Burt Reynolds!!! Burt/Bandit talks Smokey out of arresting him. After Smokey walks aways, Burt is gone and there's Jerry Reed again dressed as the Bandit. The woman with him asks, "How'd you do that?" He shrugs his shoulders and says, "I don't know!" and then drives off.
I'm all for silliness in movies, but that scene was totally ridiculous (and I do NOT mean the good kind of ridiculous!)
Something interesting about this movie that one or two other reviewers have mentioned here: this wasn't the first version of Smokey And The Bandit 3 to be filmed. The original version starred Jackie Gleason as both Smokey AND The Bandit. It's title was going to be Smokey IS The Bandit. I remember seeing a story about it on Entertainment Tonight. They showed Gleason dressed as both characters and it actually looked kind of interesting.
I think that version was tested in some theaters, didn't do well, and was canned. That's why they started over and made the version of Smokey And The Bandit 3 that eventually came out.
Too bad. I think the version with Gleason playing both parts would have been more fun to watch. Maybe someday it will be released on DVD...

Summary: Total crap - but provided one interesting memory.
Comment: I saw the theatrical release...in fact about three times (it was a long summer in rural KY and the movies were $1).
Was there really an 'alternate' version of this film? I seem to remember a scene when Gleason 'played' the Bandit...some sort of fantasy thing. Whatever.
There was one scene that provided me with a memory. Justice is talking to some floozie about something...and she offers him a 'good time'. He replies "I'm interested in pursuit, not partytime." Unfortunately, the dubbing department didn't do a very good job of superimposing the word "partytime" over what Gleason actually said...which also started with 'p', had two syllables and referenced the female anatomy. Thus my band of bike-riding friends and I had a good two or three hours worth of slightly rebellious entertainment 'renacting' the 'moment'.

Summary: I want the ORIGINAL version of this film
Comment: There are two version of this movie. In the original version of "Smokey and the Bandit 3", Jackie Gleason plays the Bandit *and* the Sheriff. It is VERY strange. I saw it in the original theatrical release. They pulled it and remade it soon afterwards because it confused audiences.
The original needs to be seen. It is bizzare, but work being seen just because of the schizophrenic nature of Jackie Gleason's performance.
It is even meantioned in "Bill and Ted Go To Hell" (aka "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey".)
If anyone is listening, please release the original version on widescreen DVD. It needs to be seen!

Summary: How about a seperate DVD release?
Comment: I recently bought the Smokey and the Bandit Pursuit Pack, mainly for the first two. I had no idea that they made a thrid one. Now that I have seen it, I wish the Universal would set out a singular DVD release.
