Summary: Factual Fun For Everyone.
Comment: This video series is a must who prefer enducational videos to pointless miandering tv shows. If these videos were released a few years AFTER the Baby Einstein series became so popular (instead of a few years before) they would be hot!
I love these and my 3 year old loves these more. They feature 3 very life like puppets in a "natural setting" as uncle balzac (a chamelion) teaches 2 young animals who about different animals of the world. With beautiful national geographic footage of animals in nature (no animals in zoo's here) they cover different aspects of animals. With fun sing-alongs, funny puppets, and beautiful animals your child will be learning what a "mammal" or "nocturnal" is, which animals can fly, how animals find their food, different habbitats and more. In this particular video the young possum dreams of flying like a bird. Young children will learn the basics of what allows creatures the ability to fly (and why others can't) and different types of birds.
As for the parent who said she'd rather let her 3 year old watch sherk: a movie with farting, burping, and adult sexual induendoes...well I'll leave it to everyone decide for yourself.

Summary: Good Fun, Memorable Songs
Comment: My preschooler has had this video for at least a year and still enjoys watching it--we also like Nat'l. Geographic's Really Wild series. We love the songs, and I find myself humming them for a few days after watching the tape--definitely a 5 star review for our family.
I consider this a high quality series for young kids; I don't expect my 4 year old to learn a whole lot by watching TV, so this isn't much of an issue for me. She has learned a bit, but mainly looks forward to the music, animal footage, and cute puppet characters. So, great entertainment, and stimulates curiosity and questions about animals.

Summary: Hyeractive and annoying
Comment: We received the complete set of GeoKids videos for our 3-year old for Xmas. They really stink, which is disppointing given the Nat Geo name. It's apparent that the producers of this series aren't familiar with recent studies showing that early video watching is linked to Attention Deficit Disorder in kids, particularly when the visual images jump quickly from one scene to another. The GeoKids series is frantic -- lots of quick cuts from one scene to another, lots of video where the screen is split into 4 or more sections, lots of annoying frantic noise. I'ts like a training tape to develop ADD.
Plus, the Annoyance to Grownups factor is huge! The narrator for these videos is the most annoying narrator of any kids' video I've sceen. The guy talks in a squeeky, strangely modulated voice that's modeled on PeeWee from PeeWee's playhouse, but much more annoying. I can't even stand to hear the videos in the distance from another room. So unless you've got a sound-proof room where your toddlers can listen to these, stay away from the GeoKids videos.
I find it particularly annoying that these videos are marketed as "educational." Presenting a kid with lots of animal facts in a hyperactive, jumbled context isn't educational. I would rate the average Disney or Pixar movie, e.g. Bug's Life or Shrek, as much more educational because they present the child with a coherent story that requires a higher level of understanding and integration of ideas (e.g. cause and effect).
