It could have hung from the rafter but I chose to weight it with sand and set it on the attic flooring. The birds are gone. I placed the decoy just above our poolside gas torch. Two days later, not only did the decoy NOT keep the doves at bay, the doves actually built a nest in the gas torch!!!! The doves continue to remain in the nest and since had two babies which are nearly 10 days old. As a last comment, you can purchase the same (or very similar) horned owl at Home Depot cheaper.
