Summary: Pokemon Yellow Version -GB
Comment: Good game I thought some of the graphic's were a little tacky for my taste although the funny part is they say this game is for the original Game Boy but when you play the game the background like houses and the ocean and people the graphics really suck major but when you get into a pokemon battle with another trainer and you see both pokemon their both in crystal clear color which is really weird because this game is suppose to be for the GB not GBC so go figure I just thought that was pretty interesting that only the pokemon would come in color who knows maybe that's why they said on the front "Special Pikachu Edition" on the game boy cartridge but I will admit this game with out a dout in my mind is extremely to long but a very interesting game good for very long road trips defently Oh and remember if your going on a long road trip and you take your GBA SP remember to take the car charger with you for that sort of thing or the easy way take the Original GBA and just buy double AA batteries when you need them I wouldn't really recommend taking the GBA SP on long road trip just because when you plug in the car charger you can't listen to the radio while the car charger is in I found that out the hard way 1 time I plugged in the car charger but then it some how wouldn't let me listen to the radio. So buy this game if you have a roadtrip coming up and you get bored in the car very easily or if you just need something to do or just get bored any where. If you have an extremely short attention span do not get this game you will get bored with it really quickly and then want to trade it in and it is a little bit of a frustrating game at times so if you can't take frustration don't get this game either. I would recommend this game for anyone 10 years of age or older.

Summary: A good continuation of this never ending series.
Comment: This game is essentially pokemon red or blue with the graphics updated a little. So I won't bore you with talking about the core game play. However, I will talk to you about what makes this game different than red or blue, therefore allowing it to receive high marks. This version makes the game a lot more like the show. Your starting pokemon is pikachu, but this time he/she follows you around on foot instead of in a pokeball. You can see it on screen following your every move. They also incorporated new features around this like checking your pikachu's happiness/loyalty. Sometimes pikachu is a bit annoying, but that can be expected. In the end this addition adds more to the game play than you would think. Great game, but more of a expansion pack than a sequel.

Summary: Great Pokemon Game
Comment: I am old school when it comes to Pokemon and this is one of the best of the original three games. The controls and goal are the same as in Red and Blue with a few new features such as Pikachu following you and being able to check its mood and the introduction of Team Rocket's Jesse and James.

Summary: Watching Pikachu following you throughout is priceless in itself. 4.1 stars.
Comment: The graphics are piss-poor but the game play and music rarely get better.

Bulbasaur is better than any other starter ever and always will be. Charmander was cute but not as cool. And Squirtle as adorable as he was was way too slow.

The madness never stopped in my house once me and my bro (22 and 16 now) got these into our grubby paws. We did next to no trading, but tons of gaming.

33 Pokemon that are in this title are:

Bulbasaur, Meowth, Persian, Starmie, Dragonair, Koffing, Weezing, Ekans, Arbok, Seel, Dewgong, Zapdos, Geodude, Graveler, Golem, Vulpix, Vileplume, Articuno, Electabuzz, Ponyta, Gloom, Tangela, Lickitung, Mewtwo, Chansey, Taurus, Jynx, Oddish, Golbat, Horsea, Dragonite, Diglett and Magmar.

It's only better because Pikachu follows you everywhere, has a feelings meter and can surf if you know how to access it. Also, an extra point because Team Rocket unsuccessfully crashes your party. Priceless, really. And *JUST* like the anime. =^)

Game play : A-
Sound : B-
Originality : D- (bit off of Blue and Red's style like Woah. The only thing remotely original was the fact that your yellow, adorable Pikachu followed you and he surfed.

And remember the 3 starters from Blue/Red (Bulba, Charm and Squirt? If you play your cards right you can have them all, helping create a wonderous team to be reckoned with! Also Team Rocket tried and failed each time to ambush your journey throughout Kanto!

Editorial Reviews:

While it's basically the same game as the previously released Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition features enhancements that make it the best version yet. In all three versions, the player is on a quest to become the World's Greatest Pokémon Trainer, with exploration and Pokémon battles (think advanced paper-scissors-rock) factoring heavily into the gameplay. While the game world is the same in all three versions, the Pokémon you encounter vary from version to version; the underlying goal of collecting all 151 Pokémon can only be met by trading Pokémon via Link Cable with another player with a different Pokémon version. (Players can also battle against one another using the Link Cable setup.)

Pokémon Yellow follows the TV cartoon series more closely than the other versions. Your first Pokémon in Yellow is Pikachu, and he travels alongside you as opposed to inside a Pokéball (like most Pokémon). Pikachu's mood can be displayed virtual pet style: keeping him happy is important, as his mood affects certain events in the game. In addition to the inclusion of other TV show elements like Team Rocket, new battle modes between players are available as well as a secret game called Pikachu's Beach.

If you haven't played any of the Pokémon games before, Pokémon Yellow is the best place to start. But while Pokémaniacs will go gaga over Yellow's new features, less enthusiastic veterans of Red and Blue may not find the extras to be quite so special. --Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Best version yet of the highly addictive Pokémon game
  • Pikachu's moods raise the game's cuteness bar to an all-new level
  • Features new battle modes between players
  • Includes Pikachu's Beach secret game
Cons:
  • Pokémon battles can be repetitive at times
  • New features may not be enough for some Pokémon veterans
