Summary: Excellent product for the price!
Comment: I have hated my closet for about 4 years now but didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on a custom closet. It's the long reach in kind with minimal space. I purchased the Rubbermaid Deluxe Closet Kit just a couple of weeks ago and now I love my closet and have more space than I thought was possible. This is a great product for the price and pretty easy to install if you have all the right tools. It really maximizes all your space and looks great in the titanium. I have a few tips for those of you who have yet to buy and install it.

- Paint the inside of your closet first. I painted a dark brown color and it makes the closet look bigger and much nicer.
- Be careful how far apart you place the vertical wall attachments. It says over 22" for the shelves but then my small hanger bar was too short and I had to drill new holes. Just measure the distance to be slightly less than the shortest bar.
- Buy metal wall supports and toss the weak plastic ones that come with it. If you install into drywall without studs you will need them.
- Use a leveler!
- Unless you are super handy, it's easiest to install this with two people if you want everything leveled properly.
- For the ladies, I was able to place all of my boots across the top rack and now they are all in easy view and off the floor.
- The install was probably the easiest part of this project. The most time consuming was cleaning out my closet, removing the old supports and painting. Be prepared to spend some time but it is all VERY worth it in the end!

Summary: Great product, very easy & customizable, not so great to ship...
Comment: I ordered a Rubbermaid Configurations 4-8 foot Deluxe Custom Closet Kit, as well as sliding wire basket to go along with it. First, the few negatives...at no fault of Amazon.com's. The basket arrived damaged, at a point that was very noticeable and not easy to fix or hide (the plastic caps that are built-in to the ends of the grab bar to slide the drawer out, one was cracked...or more crunched beyond belief). These pieces aren't put in by the consumer, they are already glued (I'm assuming) into the ends of the bar, and it sticks out like a sore thumb, not to mention can CAUSE a sore thumb...when you cut yourself from grabbing the bar near the cracked plastic. So, I returned the basket and asked that another one be shipped to me. The Amazon return process is pretty easy, I opted for the Amazon-paid USPS shipper, which I printed immediately. The return seemed to get "lost", and unfortunately Amazon doesn't pay for tracking on those returns (A tip that I got from the post office: in the future, pay the extra $1.50 or so for the USPS track and confirm service, added onto what's pre-paid by Amazon, to avoid this. Even though Amazon.com pays shipping, you can add this service out of your pocket without re-paying for the entire shipping charge.). After getting the "you will be charged in a few days" e-mail and going back and forth, Amazon assured me they would't charge me, then miraculously a few weeks later, they got the return package.

So that was my sliding drawer. The replacement came and wasn't damaged. However, the 4-8 foot deluxe closet kit also had damaged clothes rod caps. Fortunately, these caps you put in yourself, so I could pick and choose the less damaged ones (most if not all were damaged to some extent, but most damage was easily hidden in the clothes rods, as it was the inner part of the caps that was crushed). After getting around this small inconvenience, I got the hand rails mounted, the rails hung, and the shelves in place.

So that's the bad part...and for that reason, I would recommend what I've since found out...Lowe's sells the white version of these, and just calls them something different, but still Rubbermaid (I believe Rubbermaid Home or Rubbermaid Closet Home Essentials, or something like that). So you can probably get it at your local Lowe's at prices that are about the same, and not have to worry about shipping damage. Lowes.com, however, doesn't sell these...so I imagine only certain markets have them in stores.

Now for the good part. I did some research on Consumer Reports on custom closet systems before purchasing them. I had Closetmaid in my mind at the time, until I saw the ratings...and Rubbermaid won for several reasons, including quality of the product, ease of installation/customization, etc. It really was very easy to install, and I used this particular kit in my laundry room...and well, since I installed it, I've rearranged the shelves about 5 or 6 times. Each time it only took me about 5 minutes to completely rearrange things, and half that time was spent taking everything off of the shelves. You just slide the shelf locks to the unlocked position, pull the shelves off, move the brackets, put the shelves back up, and re-lock them in place with the sliding locks. It's that simple. Being that easy, you might thing they don't hold in place very well, but the simple shelf locks do the trick--they aren't going anywhere once you slide the locking mechanism. Quality seems very good too (assuming it arrives undamaged). I was somewhat leary with the overlapping shelves idea...to combine two smaller shelves into one bigger shelf, but the way Rubbermaid does it is pretty clever...they have A and B shelves, clearly labeled. One is slightly longer than the other, but not so much that it's noticeable or looks funny. They overlap when needed perfectly, without looking odd, being out of balance, or anything like that.

Overall I would highly recommend this product, but you may want to try Lowe's for it, based on potential shipping damage which occurred with both of my shipments. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Amazon.com, and have NEVER had an unresolved issue with them. However, this just might be a product that is better purchased in the store, unless you have the time and patience for a potential return/exchange. It didn't cost me a cent, other than a few extra days delay, and some follow-up finding the return package. However, although I've placed about 7 or 8 Amazon.com orders since then...this is one product I probably won't purchase via ANY mail-order method again. ;)

Summary: Looks good after assembly issues are resolved
Comment: I like the design concept and the way my clothes are organized after I finally got it assembled. Some of the issues I came across during the design planning and assembly:

1) Make sure you have a closet design layout prior to purchase. On the Rubbermaid Configurations website they showed a 12 ft closet system that nobody sells. I couldn't use the design program on the Rubbermaid website and I needed to purchase two kits for my 11 foot closet. The best way I found to do this was to get both the 4-8ft Deluxe and 3-6ft Classic kits at the same time to achieve my desired configuration.

2)Allow for ample time to assemble a large closet system. Video simplicity is deceiving. Wall stud location will affect number of anchors required on your uprights. There weren't enough anchors even though I had two kits. If you need to use extra anchors, plan for their location ahead of time so it doesn't impact your configuration. I had to use different anchors and the flushness of the screws on the uprights will affect bracket location and installation.

3) Make sure you account for ceiling height in your layout. I only had a 7ft ceiling height and I forgot about the baseboard molding and had to notch it in order to add the lower extensions.

4)The A & B slots did not function as designed in all instances and can become frustrating. I had to redo the overlapping shelves and change positions a few times to get them stable.

Summary: Great setup! Suggestions for configuration are on box
Comment:
Very easy to setup. The back of the box gives you some ideas for different configuration ideas.

The top track is the most important part to install correctly. I would take a piece of masking tape or blue painter's tape and line it up across the wall. Get a feel for the height at where you want the rods, and make sure the tape is level. and then hold the track up above the tape and do your drilling.

If you are drilling into wallboard without studs behind it, get familiar with how to use the included wall anchors before you go drilling holes. If you feel your wallboards are weak, look into some other wall anchor options at your local Home Depot or Lowe's.

If you are not careful with holding the pieces up against the wall and let it rub against your paint too much, it will dirty up your walls.

Editorial Reviews:

A five-tier shelf offers plenty of easy access to folded clothes, shoes, boxes, hats and more with this custom closet organizing kit from Rubbermaid. The kit includes two 48-inch hang rails for easy wall mounting. With the hang rails in place, installing the rest of the kit is a snap. The kit easily fits closets from 4 to 8 feet in length without cutting any of the materials. The shelves and hanging rods are adjustable for up to 10 feet of hang space and 22 feet of shelf space. All pieces of the kit have a long lasting epoxy, satin nickel or chrome finish and will not stain or snag. With 8 feet more shelf space than the Rubbermaid 3G5900, this is the kit for wintertime sweaters, jeans, and other foldable clothes. --Brian D. Olson
