Comment: Best movie with an actual story that I have enjoyed in many years. It is a bit violent, but the story is built around the violence of one group of people towards another. Having to read subtitles was no problem as I was so into the story and what was going on I hardly knew I was reading the lines. The actors were so good you knew what was going on even when there was no script. Yes a great movie......

Comment: Apocalypto (Mel Gibson, 2006)

So many reviews of this film I've read, both amateur and professional, dwell on the violence. I don't know what other movies these folks are watching. The Passion of the Christ, for one obvious comparison that's just as mainstream, was far, far more violent than this was. There are movies less than half this long that are far more violent. I think the bottom line as far as this goes is that if you have a weak stomach, you might want to avoid Apocalypto, but if you had no problem with The Passion of the Christ (or, honestly, Eastern Promises), then don't let all the shock over the "extreme" amount of violence in this movie get to you. If you want to see it, the violence won't bother you.

In any case, the story: Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) is a warrior and hunter in a small rural tribe. Everything's going along swimmingly until a Mayan slaver band attacks and captures almost the entire tribe. Jaguar Paw is able to send his wife Seven (Dalia Hernandez) and son off to hide in a hole, but the slavers find out about it and cut the vine she's supposed to use to climb out. Thus, Jaguar Paw has to find a way to escape before he's sacrificed and rescue his wife and son before they starve, or die of thirst.

Not a bad little revenge thriller, this, and Gibson, as he did with The Passion of the Christ, adds the mystique of a foreign setting and a language far removed from that most people are familiar with. As a gimmick, I'm sure it will grow old eventually, but Gibson is a proven director on ground he's very familiar with. As a result, the film is very effective. The cinematography is gorgeous, unsurprising as Gibson once again pairs with Dean Semler (Dead Calm, The Road Warrior, Razorback), one of those fantastic cinematographers they grow down in Australia. The make-up jobs are gorgeous, and the action sequences are choreographed in such a way that you'd never think they were choreographed. This is good stuff. Gibson turns in another winner; when he's behind the camera, it seems, he can't lose. *** ½

Summary: almost nailed it but....
Comment: Since when did the Mayans use words like, "balls", "oaf", "girth" and "fellas"? If you can get past those minor slips that occasionally happen when a filmmaker chooses to capture a bit of history, but sneaks in or unknowingly ads words that I highly doubt existed back then, but then again what do I know, however it did distract me and make me cringe because I wasn't sure what I was about to watch. Entertaining action film though if you can get over the things I didn't. There are some great historical moments however, brilliant cinematography, beautifully shot...What's missing is the true Mayan culture. You never really know how it started or why, but still a worth while film to see the violent side of it, but you're questions will still be unanswered.

Summary: good movie but...
Comment: I could have enjoyed this movie a lot more if the sound effects were shut out. An interesting and original topic which was filmed quite brilliantly but oh the sound track. Why or why if you wanted authenticity Mr Gibson did you not let the sound of the jungle and the village raids, etc. stand on their own? Are we viewers so dumb we need drums and other 'musical' sounds to understand the obvious? Just a point of clarity here - I thought that the sound of flutes were associated with the Incas just a few miles south of the Aztecs! Unfortunately the sound track spoilt what could have been a brilliant film for me. Why don't producers and directors keep these sound effects people in check? OK has some effects now and again but dialogue and good camera work is enough - the overt the top and inappropriate sounds are just not necessary

Editorial Reviews:

All Movie Guide - As the foundation of the Mayan civilization begins to crumble one man's previously idyllic existence is forever changed when he is chosen as a sacrifice needed to appease the gods in director Mel Gibson's mythic end-times adventure. The Mayan kingdom is at the absolute height of opulence and power but leaders are convinced that unless more temples are constructed and more human sacrifices made the crops and ultimately the people will suffer. Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) is a peaceful hunter from a remote forest tribe whose life is about to be changed forever. When Jaguar Paw's village is raided and he is prepared as a sacrifice that the Mayan deities have demanded the brave young hunter is forced to navigate a horrific new world of fear and oppression. Fearlessly determined to escape his captors and save his family from a harrowing demise Jaguar Paw prepares to risk it all in one final desperate attempt to preserve his dying way of life. However few who have seen the sacrificial alter of the Mayans have managed to live to see another day. Now in order to rescue his pregnant wife and young son Jaguar Paw will have to elude the most powerful warriors of the Mayan kingdom while using his vast knowledge of the forest to turn the tables on those who would rather see him dead than set free. Inspired by such ancient Mayan texts as the Popul Vuh Apocalypto marks a comprehensive collaboration between director Gibson Cambridge-educated screenwriter Farhad Safinia and world-renowned archeologist and Mayan culture expert Dr. Richard D. Hansen -- whose services as a special consultant on the film lent the production an unprecedented degree of historical accuracy. - Jason BuchananFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE UPC: 786936705089 Manufacturer No: 05064600
