Summary: Surprised Chocolate Fan :)
Comment: When first purchasing this product I was very hesitant. In the past few years I had always had flip phones and became very comfortable with them. I was very unsure of the idea of a sliding phone and at first wanted my flip phone back. After using the phone for almost a year now I am very pleased. I am infamous for going through many phones after becoming annoyed with them, but I am happy to report that I still love my chocolate. The slider works perfectly. It is very easy to open the phone with one hand with little effort. In terms of the touch pad, I know there were many problems with the first generation of chocolate phones and their sensitivity but I turned the sensitivity down to medium when I first received the phone and I have never had any problems with it.
Also, I love the color. I have always had silver phones and with this phone I don't need a cover. The scratches are not incredibly noticeable like they always were with my old phones. I always seem to drop the phone or knock it against something so this is the perfect color if you don't want to show off your clumsiness. The only drawback of the color is if you want to put it in a large purse or bag... I tend to have trouble finding it in the bottom of my bags!
While this phone doesn't have all the capabilities of a blackberry or any of those newfangled gadgets, it is the perfect phone for someone that just wants a phone that makes phone calls. It does have the internet and an MP3 player and probably many other bells and whistles but it is not too complicated for someone that struggles technologically.
Overall I love this phone and I would definitely suggest it. After a year it still works wonderfully and I am very pleased!

Summary: These negative reviews almost prevented me from getting this phone
Comment: I took a gamble after reading some good and some really bad things about this phone. I had a LG VX8300 for a little over two years and felt that it was time for a free upgrade. I waited a month or so until they got this black cherry color in and I ordered it with my fingers crossed. I had no complaints with my last phone, but these two are like night and day. The chocolate is very sleek looking on the outside and it's menu interface is so much more interactive, not to mention more pleasing to the eyes, than the VX8300. The scroll wheel works great (much like an iPod) as do the touch sensitive buttons located below the screen.

I have only had it for a day, so problems could occur in the future, but as of now, I think I made the right choice.

Summary: black cherry chocolate 2!
Comment: let me give a disclaimer that this is my 1st video/music/1.3 camera phone after using a phone that is 4 years old. i was filled with glee when i first got this one.

pros:
+ sleek, slim, and sexy slider phone
+ of good weight for a cell phone
+ color is awesome: dark bloody red!
+ nice finished gloss on phone
+ menu interface seems like other LGs. can move left to right for diff menus and up to down to look within each menu
+ each contact can have 7 info lines: mobile 1&2, home, work, email 1&2, fax
+ music is clear
+ music player stops when phone calls in! and plays once hung up! wow!
+ music shortcut smartkey is on the side of phone
+ complimented for the clear call quality!!
+ each side button/cover is of the glossy hard plastic, so no soft plastic covers!
+ 2gb microsd card
+ decent camera
+ has dedicated camera button
+ EZ tip calculator! interesting.
+ accessories can be found cheap

cons:
- navigation wheel and touchpad are kind of too close together and my fingers sometimes tap on the touchpad when i meant to slide the wheel. both still sensitive to the touch.
- navigation wheel feels flimsy to me
- can't adjust music player volume until played. this makes for a loud noise when u decide to play it in a setting that is quieter than the last setting you were in.
- needs headphone adapter
- video recording isn't the sharpest but usable
- zooming of video recording allowed but *clicking* of zoom is recorded loudly
- phone lock is on too quickly (ie: when in music player and want to skip, searching through phonebook and pausing for a bit)
- speaker is on back of phone so when music player is on, have to lie it face down to hear clearly
- menu items are set and unchangeable (order-wise or items shown)
- no games
- number pad feels small to me. i end up misstexting letters
- 5-minute alarm snoozes?!
- bad ringtones that arrived with it
- some pictures are undeletable that arrived with it

Summary: Horrible Phone
Comment: I have had this phone about 3 months and...

the battery dies within a day or 2 without even using

the screen goes out from time to time

the wheel feature is annoying and spins too fast

the touch pad feature is pointless and annoying since i tend to press on it while chatting on the phone

the screen scratches easily (not scratch free, must purchase a screen protector)

Editorial Reviews:

Slimmer, lighter and sweeter than ever, LG updates its Chocolate slider phone to the VX8550 with improvements including a new metal navigation wheel (which traces your finger's movement with a small light), vibrating touch keypad, and the ability to run the music player in the background while using the other features of the phone. But many of the much vaunted features of the original Chocolate remain: silky-smooth slider design support for V Cast Music, an integrated music/video player, a 1.3 megapixel camera/camcorder, stereo Bluetooth capabilities, and a microSD memory slot for up to 4 GB of storage. In addition to Verizon's V Cast Music feature, this phone is also enabled with the Get It Now service, which allows you to easily download ringtones, games, and applications. It runs on Verizon's CDMA 850/CDMA 1900 frequencies and EV-DO high-speed data network. (Learn more about where EV-DO coverage is offered.)

The camera can also capture video clips--30 seconds for sending and up to 1 hour for saving to memory card--at a 176 x 144-pixel resolution. It's compatible with playing MP3, 3GP, and 3G2 video formats, and you can set a video as your screen's wallpaper (as long as it's under 5 MB in size).

You can also take advantage of the Chocolate's Bluetooth wireless headset capability, allowing you to hook up a pair of Bluetooth stereo headphones.

Design

Opening the slider reveals a numeric keypad, as well as the 1.3-megapixel camera and LED flash, which are housed on the rear of the phone. The touch keypad provides an improved feel for quicker input.

Calling Features

The phone lets you easily assign pictures as well as ringtones to your most common callers. In addition to vibrating alerts, the phone supports polyphonic ringtones, and a number of ringtones come preloaded on the phone and more ringtones can be downloaded from Verizon's Get It Now service. Lastly, the Chocolate's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.

Messaging, Internet, and Tools

With Verizon's Mobile Email option, the LG Chocolate allows you to send and receive emails from MSN, Hotmail, and America Online, as well as access your address book and be alerted to new email.

When used in combination with the Chocolate's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. There's also a built-in web browser for downloads and mobile web browsing. Verizon's optional Mobile Web 2.0 package allows you to read and send emails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. You can check your email, trade stocks online, compare prices while shopping, access flight information, get movie listings and find directions to the theater. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

With support for the EV-DO high-speed data standard, the Chocolate is fully compatible with Verizon's V Cast service. With V Cast music, your phone is a music player, letting you jam out wherever you are. It's also a music store, and you can download songs instantly to your phone. Save your songs to a memory card with a capacity that's right for you. You can even pause to take a call without missing a beat. You can also download and stream high-quality video--get the latest Accuweather forecast delivered right to your handset, or stream CNN news headlines. ESPN sports updates, entertainment news from E!, and even Sesame Street content for the kids. A number of handy software tools are bundled with the Chocolate including a voice memo recorder that can record calls, a calculator, a calendar, and an alarm clock. You can even set the alarm to wake you to your favorite music. Also included with the Chocolate is Verizon's VG Navigator software, which allows you to get real-time, turn-by-turn audible directions as you're driving.
