Customer Rating: Summary: Magellan Maestro Comment: I love having a GPS. The Magellan is a very good one, but whether it is better than a Garmin or a Tom Tom I cannot say. Mine is so accurate that at night I can use it to find a poorly lit side road. I enjoy the field that gives altitude, speed and heading (yes, I have a private pilot's license). I thought that the voice recognition would be more useful than it is--it has a limited vocabulary, so that the only command that I found useful was "Home," in which case it would lead me on the roads home. Since it sometimes was activated by a voice on the radio I turned off the voice recognition and have not used it.
Some of the routes that it has calculated have been bizarre, especially on longer trips. On a 300 mile trip, according to Google Map, Magellan calculated a 500 mile route, taking me 100 miles out of my way and then back along the same interstate to what I knew to be the best route. When I broke the trip down into shorter segments it was accurate once again. An older Magellan that I had routed me the wrong way on a one way street in a Boston suburb and had the wrong address for a restaurant in central Massachusetts, but then Mapquest had the same wrong address. Even with those errors, after I dropped it in the cold transferring it to a rental car, I replaced it with another Magellan
It isn't perfect, but I wouldn't want to be without it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Easy to use Comment: This is my first navigation system and I love it. I did quite a bit of research before making this purchase. The unit is very easy to use and intuitive in programming the destinations. The only downsides I see with this is the unit is a bit slow in acquiring the satellite signal and a little slow in announcing highway exits when traveling at 55+ MPH. You should be looking ahead at the next turn off when travling on the highway or you might drive past your exit.
Customer Rating: Summary: Map version outdated Comment: Bought one of these in August 2008. The map version is outdated! According to Magellans' own web site you should be running version 31 or higher. Mine came with version 29. Magellan wants $79.99 to download the latest version! So if you plan on buying this, expect to pay another $79.99 to get the latest maps. E-mailed Magellan but never had a reply, hope their service is better if I need any. Not impressed so far.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great GPS Unit, Great Price Comment: I bought two of these GPS units in October 08, a new unit for my daughter as a gift and a refurb unit for myself. Both units work great. No major problems. I updated the firmware from Magellan's web site, it's free. I also updated the maps. Both units shipped with 07-08 maps. The update is to the latest 08-09 maps, cost is $80 per unit. The traffic indicator works great and is inexpensive $40 for a year of service. With it enabled, the unit will route you around heavy traffic. The unit is very easy to operate. The controls and screen are very intuitive. The fact that the unit can act as a hands free speakerphone (Bluetooth) is a plus. The unit works with both my BB Pearl and my daughter's Palm phone. Without the firmware update you have to connect the phone to the unit every time you want to use it. With the update, once synced, the phone will auto connect. I looked at the 4350 at a major retailer, much more $$, no real difference I could see (maybe it comes with new maps, don't know).
Customer Rating: Summary: This company is evil! Comment: I purchased a replacement mount to replace the cheap one that came with the unit that broke. The one I purchased from their website indicated it would fit my GPS but it did not. I sent it back in August after following all instructions from the magellan customer service rep. I have never received a refund. I've talked to and emailed their "customer service" departments several times. They kept me on the phone forever and promised a refund each of the several times I spoke to them. Same with the email rep. If I never reached a cust. svc. rep I wouldn't be half as mad as I am with representatives that lie. All of them lied.
