Summary: Awesome product - a revolution for women.
Comment: I bought my DivaCup about eight months ago, and I have been loving it ever since. I had always been frustrated with tampons and pads: too bulky, too dry, too much trash generated each month, too much trouble to carry around a big stash in purse, lots of leaks, and a never-ending expense. Why should I have to pay a tax for being female, right? So I'd been looking into tampon alternatives (I used and recommend OB for anyone out there still using tampons: they're small and have no applicator, so I found them much easier to use, easier to carry discretely, and they produced much less waste). I came across the Divacup and after reading hundreds of positive reviews I thought I'd give it a shot. Well, let me tell you, I've packed up my dozens of leftover tampons and pads into a big ziplock bag that I keep under the bathroom sink for the benefit of female party guests- I sure don't need them anymore. I have been so pleased with the performance of my divacup - although there is a learning curve, it's not difficult to learn how to use it. If you're like me and not too squeamish, you'll find as I did that it's extremely empowering to take charge of your reproductive health. And since it has little markings inside of it like a rain guage, you can even track how much fluid you've expelled so far - I told my boyfriend that it was like having a science project going on inside my body.

The best thing about the Divacup is that it's so passive, I often forget I'm on my period when I have it in. And if I do forget, it's no big deal - there's no risk of TSS from leaving the Divacup in overnight (which makes it great to sleep in) or for long periods of time, and since it holds more liquid than a tampon can, I can go for much longer between bathroom breaks. You know how with tampons you have to strategically plan your bathroom trips throughout the day? Not so with the Divacup. I usually used heavy-flow tampons for the first 1-3 days of my period, changing them every couple of hours, but even so, I may only empty my Divacup 2 or 3 times a day. Really amazing for a heavy-flow girl like me. I'm free to do stuff - like hiking - again, because I don't have to worry constantly about the next time I'll be near a bathroom.

Financially it makes a lot of sense - spend 80+ bucks a year on bleached cotton that goes into the landfill, or spend 20 bucks on something you can use the rest of your life? The choice is pretty clear to me. If you're not afraid of your body, I recommend the Diva Cup to you with no reservations.

Summary: Best thing that ever happened to feminine hygiene products
Comment: I found out about the divacup while I was desperately searching for something better than pads. Tampons really dry me out so I can't use them comfortably, and pads are just gross and messy and ever time I would go to the bathroom I would be reminded it's that time of the month. I read about the divacup, couldn't help thinking that it's weird and gross, and was really apprehensive about it. So I did some research, read dozens of forums and product reviews, and finally gave in and thought I'd give it a try.

I have to say, the divacup is the best thing that ever happened to feminine hygiene products. It's comfortable, clean, easy to use, great for any kind of physical activity such as riding a bike, running, swimming, snowboarding--you'll completely forget it's there, and it has no odor AT ALL. I put it in the morning of the day when I expect to get my period, so I never have to worry about messy surprises anymore. I empty it and wash it with soap and hot water twice a day, in the morning before I leave home and in the evening before I go to bed. Usually, I shower in the morning so I just wash it in the shower and put it back in, it takes a total of 2 minutes or less. It's great for travel! No more changing tampons in airport restrooms or worrying about leaks, I put it in before I leave and I am good to go for the next 12 hours or so.

That said, there are certain drawbacks to the divacup. It has to be washed twice a day so, when I go camping, I usually only wear it if I know there will be showers available. You could, of course, just wash it in the sink in a public restroom, but I expect you'll get lots of dirty looks. I personally don't feel comfortable emptying it out or putting it in while in a public restroom, but when I don't have a choice, I wipe it down with a wet paper towel in the stall, then reinsert. That is hardly ever an issue, though--I've only had to do it a couple of times while flying overseas. It should be washed with potable water, so that's something else to consider if you travel a lot to places with poor water quality, though the divacup can be boiled to be sanitized when potable water is not available.

I can only think of one real disadvantage, and that's the steep learning curve. It took me some time before I got the hang of how exactly to insert it easily and what it should feel like when it's been inserted correctly. I got some leakage my first period on the divacup because I hadn't inserted it correctly, and that wasn't a pleasant experience. However, once you're used it, inserting and removing it is really easy. I trimmed off the stem on mine and now there's less than 1/4" left, which improved comfort tremendously (i.e. can't feel it at all, which is the way it should be). One really nice thing about the cup is that is doesn't dry you out at all, and you don't have to wait to get your period before you put it in. That means you get to practice!

Overall, the divacup has completely changed my attitude about my period--I don't hate it, dread it, or change my plans because of it anymore. Divacup's awesome :).

Summary: The best alternative
Comment: I wish that I would have found this product years ago. I do not understand why woman have to feel like their only options are tampons or pads. Products like these need to be more widely advertised. That said, I was very pleased with this product; most importantly because it DOES NOT LEAK at all. I have friends who do not feel comfortable being that up, close and personal with their vaginas so I can see why it would make some people feel uncomfortable. For myself I was using OB tampons so had no huge adjustments to make. This is perfect for any physical activity, any kind of clothing (thongs) and since there is no waste its perfect for camping or being somewhere where you don't have running water to clean up. It is very cost affective, since one lasts you years, and like I said NO WASTE so you can go green! I love it. I want to suggest it to all my aunts, sisters, girl friends etc. Its also better to order it online because it is hard to find in stores.

Summary: Wonderful!
Comment: I bought my DivaCup after reading so many great things about menstrual cups, and I am so glad I did! It takes a little getting used to, and I highly recommend reading the tips on http://community.livejournal.com/menstrual_cups even before you buy so you can know if it is right for you. I've had it for two cycles now, and I love being able to do everything I do the rest of the month without wearing a "diaper" or drying out from tampons. This has been one of the greatest purchases I ever made. It's also nice to not have to run to the store to stock up on supplies every couple of months!

Summary: Feminine Cups
Comment: I started using "INSTEADS" (another brand of feminine cups sold at drug stores) years ago. You get about 12 of them for around $[...]. I love them. Some people may find it "yucky" but aren't periods yucky ... I save big time on them. I use one per period but I have used them for several periods before. I am a heavy bleeder and the way it works for me ... my "jut in case I leak" pad hardly ever has anything on it. When I sit down to urinate ... the cup empties itself for me. I try to take it out at least once a day to clean it but you don't have to .... it just makes me feel better. I am anxious to try this cup ... I did not realize there was another brand. If you are leary of paying this much for a feminine cup try the brand I use since it's cheaper to make sure you will like it. They make my periods a little easier to bear. Good Luck.
