Customer Rating: Summary: Finn's Girl. Comment: Finn's Girl", a narrative about a woman named Finn. The girl is her daughter, Zelly. Finn is a (lesbian) widow in contemporary society who is working toward piecing aspects of her life together re matters of the heart. Finn is a well respected medical doctor/gynecologist who manages a busy and demanding abortion clinic. Finn, finds herself constantly receiving death threats from fanatical right-winged Christians and is protected by police security 24/7. She is rearing a 12 year old child who's testing the boundaries on levels, with Finn and with the law.
Brilliant little film. I agree, intelligently scripted. Brilliant in how it addresses controversial subject matters such as: rearing of children with gay parents, recreational drug use, science and technology & abortion.
Beautifully cast on all levels. Brooke Johnson does a wonderful job.
Strongly recommend.
Customer Rating: Summary: Thoroughly Modern Comment: "Finn's Girl"
Thoroughly Modern
Amos Lassen
Another new film acquired by Wolfe Video is "Finn's Girl", a look at a modern American lesbian, Dr. Finn Jeffries. She is happy and she is feisty and has no problems with the fact that she is a lesbian. She has a modern family--two mothers, two careers and a child. Her life has been wonderful and everything has been going fine for her until the death of her beloved long-time partner, Nancy. She is lost in grief and takes risks that jeopardize her relationship with her eleven year old daughter, Zelly Bean.
Having been put into a new domestic role, she is not comfortable. Her career had put a wedge between her and her own maternal instincts. Her work has consumed her and a fling with a younger woman makes her oblivious to her daughter's attempts to get her attention. Zelly begins shoplifting, smoking dope and cutting school.
Because of what is happening in her life, Finn is in a precarious state and she faces losing her medical career. She is a brilliant gynecologist and she heads a research library that develops fertility drugs. When health risks are discovered, Finn walks away instead of endangering lives. Zelly's father, Paul Jimenez, takes over the lab and continues the project and he criticizes Finn for the way she handles Zelly and threatens to take custody of his daughter. This causes a showdown between the two and Finn reveals that Paul is not Zelly's biological father. Finn walks out and begin taking over her ex-lover's medical practice at an abortion clinic. Threats from anti-abortionists escalate to a sniper attack on Finn and police officer, Diana Perls, is assigned to protect Finn and the clinic. Diana who is intrigued by both Finn and Zelly works overtime and Finn begins to feel, for the first time since her ex's death, that she has met someone she might be able to love. Diana, however, is not comfortable with Finn's lifestyle and careless parenting. Zelly manages to create a strong connection between the two women.
There is a great deal to enjoy in this film and its honesty and reality make it a real treat. That coupled with an interesting love story makes this a film to look forward to seeing.
